Serbian media reported that a portion of the memorial was stolen in October 2009, raising concern about the security and upkeep of monuments outside major urban centres.
Serbia classified the site among its highest-tier protected cultural monuments, recognising its significance to the memory of the 1942 raid and post-war commemorative culture in Vojvodina.
Sculptor Jovan Soldatović completed nine-metre figures within a 472-hectare memorial park beside the Tisa River, roughly ten kilometres from Žabalj on the Novi Sad–Zrenjanin road.
